Fired Broward Sheriff's Lt. Pleads Gulty In Rothstein Case

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ A fired Broward Sheriff's Office lieutenant has pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge for his role in jailed former attorney Scott Rothstein's $1.2 billion Ponzi scheme.

David Benjamin entered his plea Tuesday in federal court. He faces a maximum five years in prison when sentenced July 21.

Court documents show Benjamin acknowledged receiving about $185,000 for assisting Rothstein in various ways, including having another lawyer's ex-wife arrested falsely to gain advantage in a child custody fight. A former BSO detective, Jeff Poole, pleaded guilty last week to a civil rights conspiracy charge in that arrest.

Prosecutors say Benjamin also told other deputies to force a female escort to leave the state when her boyfriend threatened to expose her relationship with a Rothstein partner.

Rothstein is serving 50 years in prison.
