Gimenez No Longer Recommending Police Cuts

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez announced at a budget update conference Thursday he would no longer recommend cutting 110 police officer jobs.

Gimenez said about $9 million dollars has been freed up, as he works on the budget for the fiscal year which begins October 1st.

The mayor said the money will come from selling county-rescue helicopters and switching to leases.

Some of the money is also newly available, since the Jackson Health System are leaving the county’s health-insurance fund.

Gimenez had previously proposed the layoffs, although the Miami-Dade Police Department could still face cuts among its civilian employees.

The budget year begins October 1st.
