The American Red Cross is offering preparedness tips as the hurricane season gets underway.

Vice President Laura Howe says no one knows when an emergency will hit, but preparedness does save lives.

The Red Cross wants everyone in South Florida to understand preparation is crucial in helping stay safe before, during, and after disasters.

People should create or purchase emergency preparedness kits with enough supplies for a family to last three days.

Include things like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, a radio, a first-aid kit, a multipurpose tool, important medications, and disinfecting bleach for cleaning.

Also, make a plan and stay informed when disaster strikes.

In addition to all these tips, the American Red Cross has a Hurricane Tracking app that is downloadable to mobile devices.

It features a one-touch "I'm Safe" messaging service.

With just one click, users can broadcast a message to their social media accounts letting people know that they're safe during or after a crisis.
