South Florida's Coral Reef Plays Role During Hurricane Season
Posted Tuesday, June 3rd 2014 @ 5am

As hurricane season gets underway, protecting the coastline from storm surge is one of the many concerns.

Rob Brumbaugh with the Nature Conservancy in South Florida says the undersea environment actually plays an important role, serve as a the first line of defense against storm surge and acting as a protective barrier from waves caused by tropical storms that come near us or impact us directly.

Brumbaugh says coral reefs can reduce 97 percent of a wave's energy, lessening the impact to our beaches.

The Conservancy is advocating for rebuilding coral reefs in order to maximize on that benefit.
