UPDATE: 10/8 @ 230pm
Democratic Senator Chris Smith (Ft Lauderdale) and Republican Senator David Simmons of Maitland propose three new changes in the stand your ground laws: 1.) better definition neighborhood watch operations, 2.) the immunity available to those involved and 3.) authority of law enforcement to investigate self-defense claims.
Earlier similar bills offered by both senators in 2013 failed to gain any traction in the Florida legislature.
The bill will now go to the full judiciary committee.
The state Senate Judiciary Committee will discuss tweaking the law that gives someone the legal right to kill if there is a reasonable fear his or her life is in danger.
The proposed chances - which were suggested by a task force - include prohibiting Stand Your Ground immunity for people dubbed the aggressor.
Another would have cops creating guidelines for neighborhood watch guards that specifically outline their jobs as observers and reporters only.
