MIAMI (AP) - Cristobal strengthens into hurricane in Atlantic; winds at 75 mph off the Bahamas.

UPDATE 8/24 5:40 PM

Tropical Storm Cristobal continues drenching the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

According to the 5:00 PM advisory issued by the National Hurricane Center, Cristobal is still delivering maximum sustained winds of 45 MPH and is now heading north at 8 MPH.

The official forecast track takes Cristobal farther east and eventually well out to sea. Cristobal is projected to develop into a hurricane Wednesday morning but it is not expected to impact the United States.

Tropical storm Cristobal causing lots of rain in the Bahamas.

There's a tropical storm warning in effect for the Bahamas.

The National Hurricane Center says Cristobal's center will move over the central bahamas through Monday.

The storm features maximum sustained winds of 45 MPH and is moving due north at a mere 7 MPH.

Some strengthening is expected during the next 48 hours. Cristobal could be a Hurricane by early Wednesday when it's due east of North Florida. The official forecast track keeps Cristobal well off the Eastern Seaboard and swings it out into the Atlantic.
