FPL Robberies Could Lead To Rate Hikes For Customers

Your electric bill could be going up ...and not only because of the higher, summer temperatures.

Florida Power & Light officials say they're increasing security following a criminal ring that has been stealing tires, wheels and car batteries from the power company's trucks across the state.

The most recent incident occurred Monday in Jupiter, but have been taking place since January across Palm Beach County, Bonita Springs and Fort Meyers.

Company spokesman Dave McDermitt tells the Miami Herald that, if the robberies persist, the cost of doing business will increase, and customer rate hikes could, in turn, result.

McDermitt says the thieves have taken more than $10,000 in property, including 68 tires and 16 batteries.

Local police have been notified of the thefts, and FPL has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the thieves.
