Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz says shes believes she did the right thing and "would do it again" when it comes to keeping a certain IT staffer on her team.
Imran Awan remained employed by Wasserman Schultz for six months after he had been banned from the House network and fired by other members of Congress.
Schultz did not dismiss Imran Awan until last week, after he was arrested on a bank fraud charge at an airport on July 24 while trying to leave the country.
Republicans and others have suggested Wasserman Schultz is hiding something, and are pushing for an FBI investigation. However, Wasserman Schultz says she had been concerned that Awan's due process rights were being violated.
“There are times when you can’t be afraid to stand alone, and you have to stand up for what’s right," she said of her decision process. "It would have been easier for me to just fire him."
Awan pleaded not guilty to the bank fraud charge.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 21, according to The Tampa Bay Times.
