A Florida woman is behind bars after police say she drove for two days with her dead daughters body in the car.
After two days, 37-year-old Erica Newsome, of Jacksonville, hit a guard rail in West Virginia and witnesses saw her proceed to drag the body into the woods, police say.
Newsome allegedly told authorities that they left Jacksonville on Friday to drive to the home of the girl's father in New York.
State Police Sgt. Herby Barlow says it was obvious the girl did not die from injuries in the accident.
Barlow said a couple traveling on the highway reported seeing Newsome removing a body from her vehicle after smashing into the guardrail Sunday, and dragging it over a hill. Newsome and the body were found on an old logging road about 150 feet beyond an embankment, he said.
The mother was jailed on $50,000 bail while investigators search for evidence in Florida.
"At this time, foul play is suspected in the child's death and we believe the death occurred in Jacksonville, Florida," the sheriff's office there said.
The girl's father, Donath Plummer, alleges Newsome texted him Saturday morning, saying she was bringing their daughter to Buffalo.
He said they married in 2007 and separated two years later. He said he hadn't seen them since Newsome moved with 11-year-old Kaye-lea to Jacksonville in 2014, but he would check on his daughter regularly by phone.
