Officials at Zoo Miami shocked after an 44-year-old African Elephant suddenly died Tuesday afternoon.
The zoo says Lisa had been under observation for more than a month after being found lying down and unable to get up.
Lisa arrived at Zoo Miami in April 2016 from the Virginia Zoo.
"This is a very difficult time for the Zoo Miami family, as well as the staff and volunteers at the Virginia Zoo where Lisa had lived for nearly 40 years," staff said in a Facebook post.
Lisa will undergo an extensive necropsy to determine the cause of death, according to zoo staff.
The results of those tests will not be known for several weeks.
