Did Miami Beach's Building Director Accept A Free (And Illegal) Gift?

Miami Beach's building director, Mariano Fernandez, is on administrative leave without pay after being accused of accepting a free stay from a hotel owner who received permits from his department.

City Manager Jimmy Morales said he received an anonymous complaint with allegations against Fernandez earlier this year. He notified Beach police, who took the matter to the state attorney, according to a report by the Miami Herald.

Fernandez confirmed on Monday that he had spoken with the state attorney's office but did not have any other comment.

Fernandez has served as the Beach’s building director since May 2013

Deputy Building Director Ana Salgueiro will replace Fernandez on an interim basis.
