MIA Testing New Automated Security Screening Lanes

The Miami International Airport is launching new, automated security screening lanes this Tuesday.

The new security systems are aimed at enhancing security effectiveness and decreasing time that travelers spend in the screening areas.

The new systems are starting in the Concourse D area.

So how does it work? When people arrive at the TSA line, they will their items into a bin which is larger than the ones used at most checkpoints.

The bins will then move on their own on a conveyor belt to be screened.

After being x-rayed, the bin is automatically diverted back to the traveler or to secondary screening if something inside needs to be checked.

Officials gathered together at 10:30 Tuesday morning to dedicate the new systems.

If successful, this process could be rolled all over the airport.
