Davie Martial Arts Studio Owner Arrested, Accused Of Child Abuse On Student

The owner of a Davie martial arts school is now facing child abuse charges after he was accused of losing his cool.

Detectives say 65-year-old Richard Rhoads Hartman got upset when he saw an 8-year-old punch a wall after losing a match on Jan. 3 at Dynamic Family Martial Arts located at 12930 W State Rd 84.

Hartman was arrested Wednesday on one count of child abuse without great bodily harm in the incident.

During the incident, Hartman became angry and grabbed the boy then threw him to the ground, police said. He then picked the boy up and dragged him to an office where he violently threw him into a chair, police said.

The boy began to cry and another student started to record the incident on a cell phone, as Hartman yelled "stop that crying" and was shaking the boy, police said.

Part of the incident was caught on video by another student.

The boy suffered some bruising.

Police are asking anyone whose children have attended any function at the studio and may have had a similar incident to call them at 954-693-8200.
