Superintendent Carvalho Is Staying In Miami-Dade, Turns Down NYC Chancellor

Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho has announced that he will be staying in South Florida! He has turned down an opportunity to take on the position of New York City Department of Education's Chancellor.

Carvalho has served as superintendent of MDCPS since 2008.

Current New York City Schools Chancellor, Carmen Fariña, is reportedly retiring in the coming weeks. Carvalho was slated to replace Fariña in the nation's largest school district.

Carvalho had not confirmed the move, but after a highly dramatic, emergency Miami-Dade school board  that took place for the better part of Thursday morning and afternoon, Carcalho announced that he won't be leaving.

"I just don't know how to walk away from this type of connection," said Carvalho following his emotional announcement. "This is a decision I have made out of respect and honor for the community that's given me a chance."
