Despite A Wet Weekend, Big Cypress Brush Fire Grows, Park Service Said

Despite weekend rains throughout the state, a brush fire in South Florida's Big Cypress National Preserve now covers more than 3,000 acres.

The National Park Service says the Anhinga Fire is located north of Interstate 75 and east of State Road 29 and is spreading to the northeast.

As of Sunday, several trails and campgrounds were closed.

Authorities say I-75 is not threatened by the fire Sunday, although the Florida Highway Patrol controls roadway closures based on low visibility from smoke.

The Anhinga Fire is burning in Palmetto, Pineland and Cabbage Palm habitat and is expected to grow due to wind direction and low relative humidity, the park service said.
