More Florida cities are joining 10 South Florida cities in push back against the state over being allowed to regulate gun laws in their municipalities.
Officials from both St. Petersberg and Tallahassee announced their decision to join Wednesday.
A 2011 law, enacted by Gov. Rick Scott, prohibits local officials from passing gun regulations that are more restrictive than state law. Local officials who defy the law face a $5,000 fine and removal from office.
The two cities join others including Weston, Miramar, Coral Gables and more in the suit against Scott and other officials.
Mayor Andrew Gillum says it's only appropriate for Tallahassee to join the suit because it's the only city that has actually been sued under the law, according to a report by The Tallahassee Democrat.
The Tampa Bay Times reports that St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman argued that the legislature has been "chipping away" at the home rule authority of cities and counties.
