Jackson Memorial Celebrating 100 Years

Jackson Health System is marking a milestone. One hundred years ago today, with a deadly influenza epidemic spreading in South Florida, Miami City Hospital opened its doors for the first time.

It had 13 beds and a handful of employees.

In the century that's followed the facility has been renamed to honor founding physician Dr. James Jackson and has grown to one of the largest health systems in the country with more than 2,100 beds with six hospitals and multiple other facilities.

This afternoon during its Centennial Celebration, hospital officials will bury a time capsule with instructions not to be opened until Jackson's bicentennial in 2118.  It will contain a letter from Jackson's current CEO to the future one, a commemorative centennial challenge coin and a 1920 photo of Dr. Jackson.
