Florida Man In Critical Condition Following Police-Involved Shooting

A Florida man is hurt after a police-involved shooting in Polk County.

Winter Haven Police shot 46-year-old Roderick Helmick Wednesday morning after they say he pointed a gun at officers.

According to authorities, the incident took place at the Royal Inn motel where Helmick works as a maintenance man.

Police say before Helmick pointed the gun at officers, he threatened to kill himself.

Those who know Helmick say he had been depressed since his wife died three months ago, and his boss tells The Ledger he had attempted suicide before.

Helmick is in critical but stable condition, and Sheriff Grady Judd says he's expected to survive.
