South Beach Hotel To Pay $2.5 In Discrimination Case Against Workers

A luxury South Beach hotel is paying to settle a discrimination lawsuit against a group of Haitian dishwashers.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued the SLS South Beach, which is owned by the hotel-and-restaurant group SBE, after the hotel outsourced its steward work to a staffing company in 2014.

Haitian workers who lost their jobs testified that they worked under a racist supervisor, were at times called “slaves” and were reprimanded for speaking Creole.

The workers at SLS also claim they were fired because of their race, color and nationality.

EEOC says SLS Hotels has agreed to pay the 17 workers nearly $2.5 million .
