Florida Democratic candidate for Governor Andrew Gillum says Republican opponent Ron DeSantis is aligning himself with President Donald Trump by saying electing Gillum would "monkey" things up.
Many Democrats have interpreted his comments as racist, as his opponent is an African-American.
DeSantis says the comment was not about race but solely about policy and he will not apologize.
Gillum says he does not personally want an apology but he believes DeSantis should apologize to the voters of Florida.
The Tallahassee Mayor won unexpectedly in the Democratic primary on Tuesday against five other candidates including Congresswoman Gwen Graham.
