Police Join Forces to Stop Stunt Riders Over MLK Holiday

Police agencies will fan out across South Florida ahead of the annual "Wheels Up, Guns Down" event.

Not officially sanctioned, the event involves riders taking ATV's, motorcycles, and other off-road vehicles onto public roadways.  The riders frequently perform dangerous stunts like wheelies and burnouts, putting pedestrians and other drivers at risk.

New Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony says for the third year in a row multiple agencies are working together to arrest the law breakers.  He's also discouraging anyone from participating in "Wheels Up, Guns Down" events.  Tony says the strong police presence is working because fewer riders are taking part.Police are even monitoring social media, since many of the dangerous rides are organized online.

The sheriff says there will zero tolerance for anyone found breaking the law.

The enforcement operation starts Saturday and runs through Tuesday.
