COVID-19 April 28th Update

If you’re looking for optimism you can find it. Eight more states took steps towards reopening Monday and there’s still no indication of an escalation of cases in states who began the process last week. Meanwhile, the CDC issued new social distancing guidelines for our pets for the duration of the pandemic. The CDC said our pets should only come in contact with us. This means not having them interact with other animals or people outside of our homes and always maintaining six feet of distance from others. This recommendation comes on back of two domestic cats testing positive with the coronavirus last week. Meanwhile, a new study out of China, suggests the likelihood of COVID-19 becoming a seasonal virus is around 97%. This is consistent with the warnings issued from the CDC last week.

Worldwide, right now, there are 3,072,863 cases, 211,738 deaths, and 924,578 recoveries. In the United States, there are 1,010,507 cases, 56,803 deaths, and 139,162 recoveries.

On Monday we crossed two ominous milestones. Three million world-wide cases and one million in the United States. Otherwise, the news was generally better than in recent days. We experienced over 76,000 additional diagnosed cases and more than 4,700 deaths worldwide Monday. There’s improvement around much of the world, however, cases are continuing to increase in Brazil and Russia. In the United States, we’ve had over 23,000 new cases and 1,388 deaths over the past day. Those are the lowest daily totals for the US in over two weeks and backs the notion that the peak is behind us.

As of this entry, there are 32,138 cases and 1,088 deaths in Florida. That means we had 610 new cases and 14 deaths attributed to the coronavirus over the past 24-hours. After a spike in new cases last Thursday, the news has considerably been better over the past few days. Florida remained 8th in the country in total cases and 10th in deaths. More than half of all of Florida’s cases currently are in the tri-county area with Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach having the most cases in the state in that order.

  • Miami-Dade: 11,570
  • Broward: 4,794
  • Palm Beach: 2,763

The overall positive test rate in Florida continue to decline on Monday. The rate, now 9% since testing began, is well lower than the peak of 11% and continues to drop as testing continues to increase. Great signs. As a reminder, the further into testing we go, the newest diagnosed cases are new cases obtained through community spread. This reinforces the importance of adhering to the warnings of public officials including social distancing, safer-at-home declarations, and wearing masks in public.
