This is a recap of some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.
Despite a rise in new reported COVID cases on Thursday to over 12,800, for a 10th consecutive day, Florida’s seven-day average of COVID-19 cases has declined to just over 11,800 new cases reported by the Florida Department of Health. Florida’s current trend remains the lowest since December 31st.
On a related note, 60,606 Floridians were vaccinated over the past day according to the Florida Department of Health’s daily reporting. This includes 1,183,012 Floridians who have been vaccinated with the first dose of a COVID vaccine while 123,971 people have now completed the two-dose process.
Miami Lakes-based Bank United, with 20 locations in Florida, joined the financial cancel culture announcing they’d ended their banking relationship with Donald Trump without providing any additional information. Trump had two accounts with the bank which was founded in 2017. This comes after Coral Gables based Professional Bank, with nine locations, likewise, announced last week they’d not do business with Donald Trump or any of his organizations.
We’ve learned that the Trump administration granted Florida a ten-year waiver for supplemental funding, at $1.5 billion per year, for Florida’s Medicaid program after state officials made an appeal for an extension. The wavier is the longest issued for any state for supplemental support, though Texas was also granted a ten-year wavier. Governor DeSantis said, "Continuing this essential program means Floridians will have access to quality health care when they need it".
