Q&A – How Many Floridians Are Not Getting The 2nd Dose Of A COVID Vaccine?

Today’s entry: Your story on the first dose success of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines was interesting. I’m wondering, how many people who’ve taken the first dose of the Moderna or Pfizer aren’t going back for a second?

Bottom Line: Today’s note comes on back of my story highlighting two studies indicating the efficacy of the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. Now, how many people aren’t reporting back to receive a second dose of a Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. It’s fewer 1 in 10 who aren’t. According to the most recent report from the CDC, it shows a breakdown of those who’ve received a Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. Numbers show that 88% completed the vaccine schedule, 9% are waiting for a second dose, and 3% have missed their second dose schedule.

Timing matters when it comes to receiving the second dose of a COVID vaccine. The Pfizer vaccine schedule is 21 – 24 days after receiving the first dose. For the Moderna it’s 28-31 days. Though it’s not publicized, because it’s not recommended, you may still receive a second dose of either vaccine up to 42 days after the first. Numbers show that 95.6% all Americans who’ve received a first dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine received a second dose within 42 days.

Florida is almost exactly in line with the national average as 95.4% of Floridians have completed the two-dose schedule. What isn’t clear is why there’s such a wide variance between the states, but as usual Florida is pretty much the barometer of the country.

Each day I feature a listener question sent by one of these methods.
