Florida’s coronavirus trend continued to decrease for a 12th consecutive day. On Monday, 3,705 new cases were reported by the Florida Department of Health. In more COVID news, over 8.9 million COVID-19 vaccinations, or about 41% of Florida’s total population have been vaccinated with at least a first dose of a vaccine. This includes over 6.3 million who’ve completed a vaccine series.
Governor DeSantis declared that Florida is “no longer in a state of emergency” as he signed the law limiting the use of emergency declarations at all levels of state government. The law takes effect July 1st, however, he’s using an emergency declaration to invalidate local executive actions until that time.
In related news, Governor DeSantis signed the ban on “vaccine passports”. In signing the law Governor DeSantis stated, "In Florida, your personal choice regarding vaccinations will be protected and no business or government entity will be able to deny you services based on your decision". This would seemingly set up potential legal challenges for entities that have mandated proof of vaccination for continued participation. This may include Palm Beaches Tax Collector’s Office. Last week, Tax Collector Anne Gannon stated all employees must show proof of vaccination by June 15th or get fired.
