Americans Are Fleeing To Florida In Record Numbers

Report after report continues to show the same thing. Where we live is where more Americans want to be. Not only has Florida passed Texas for the top spot in relocation for the first time on record, we're seeing even more momentum behind the great Florida migration. The latest data comes from the 2020 HireAHelper study of state migration and shows something remarkable about what’s happening to start the new year.

Turns out that 13% of all relocation’s between states are to Florida. How impressive is that? Of course, we’re but one of fifty states, and our population is just over 6% of the national population. In other words, that growth rate is essentially double what we’d expect based on average migration.

The single fastest-growing city for migration is currently Sarasota, the third fastest of any city in the country, followed by Jacksonville, which is 4th nationally and Orlando 10th nationally. Only Arizona has two cities in the top ten. Another factoid that’s remarkable is where people are coming from. The Florida story isn’t just one of people fleeing a few of the highest tax states. All told, we’re the top state for relocations for those leaving 22 states!

Yeah, nearly half of the country. And there’s no end in sight. One dynamic that has changed, is that the top growth for migrations is currently all north of us. South Florida’s migration trend has slowed considerably, with Miami specifically seeing more people migrate out of the city most recently. The biggest question at this point might be where we’re going to put all of these people who want to live here. It’s also a reminder that we should probably take time here and there to enjoy what’s all around us. We already have what so many around the country want.
