(Denmark) - The historic 17th Century stock exchange in the center of Copenhagen, Denmark is up in flames.

Passersby gasped as the building's spire collapsed as the historic works of art inside were carried out by emergency workers.

"We are saving everything we possibly can," Copenhagen fire department chief Jakob Vedsted Andersen told reporters.

Officials say everyone was able to evacuate the building which was under renovation.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. One of the city's oldest buildings dating back to 1625, the stock exchange is now home to the Danish Chamber of Commerce.

"Horrible pictures from the Bourse. So sad. An iconic building that means a lot to all of us ... Our own Notre-Dame moment," Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen wrote on X.

Yesterday was the 5th anniversary of the Notre Dame fire in Paris, which was also under renovation.
